Welcome to the official website of Majella National Park
In this site you can get up-to-date information on the Park and its
events and activities: scientific research, eco-development,
environmental education, restoration of nature, environment and
landscape, protection and enjoyment of the natural environment.
The Majella National Park is called after Mount Majella, a very
important mountain also known as “Mother Mountain”, or “Holy Mountain”
by the inhabitants of the “green” Abruzzo in central Italy.
Wild nature, inaccessible spots, breathtaking landscapes, ancient
hermitages, masterpieces of art, history and culture are all combined in
the Majella National Park and give feelings of peace, harmony and deep
spirituality – for those reasons these mountains were so dear to Pope
Celestine V and other holy people.
Bears, wolves, chamois, otters, dotterels and other animals are present
in the Park, together with immense plateaus and impressive canyons. In
the Park there are also several hermitages, abbeys, tholos (stone huts)
and historical towns famous for their handmade pottery (Rapino and
Guardiagrele), their terracotta figures (Pacentro), their turned wood
(Pretoro), their textiles (Taranta Peligna), their copper and iron (Guardiagrele),
their jewellery (Sulmona, Pescocostanzo and Guardiagrele), their pillow
laces (Pescocostanzo).
The young Majella National Park, created few years ago but already
well known, is a sanctuary for biodiversity and nature, but also a place
where culture, history and traditions are preserved and handed on to the
young.
The Park is waiting for you and looks forward to welcoming you with the
typical hospitality of the “forte e gentile”(strong and kind) Abruzzo
region.
