Description: |
Tree that can grow no more than 30 meters, at
times it has shrubby behaviour and white bark provided with
horizontal clefts. Its leaves are three-cornered, alternate and
serrated. The species is monoecious (separated sexes) with
flowers joined in aglets (hanging inflorescences). The
cone-shaped infructescence is made of “nucule”, namely as small
walnuts, with two wings. |

Flowering: |
It flowers between March and April, while the
fruits ripen at the end of summer. |

Ecology: |
Pioneer species that grows on the edges of woods
and on clearings, often on detrital slopes. On Majella it
becomes part of the Beech belt. |
|
Interest: |
Abruzzo, and in particular the Majella,
represent the most Southern limit of its areale. The species is
protected in conformity with L.R. n. 45/79 of Regione Abruzzo. |

Presence In the Park: |
This species is solely located in the “Valle di
Macchia Lunga” (Long Bush Valley), where is joined with other
interesting species like black the honeysuckle, the blueberry,
the Stone Bramble and others. |
