ATELETA Built in 1811 in the care of farmers living in former feuds of Roccapizzi and Carceri, Ateleta looks like a modern one, near the plateaux where are the turistic resorts of Roccaraso, Pescocostanzo and Rivisondoli. Don’t Miss: The Farmer Culture Museum in the Town Hall building. Town Hall: (+39) 0864/65030 CAMPO DI GIOVE Located at foot of the Mount Tavola Rotonda (m 2404), between Mount Porrara (m.2137) and the Amaro one (m. 2975), this village is in the middle of the Park. Don’t Miss: the walnut chorus, fostered in the Church of Sant'Eustachio, Casa Quaranta and Palazzo Nanni, general headquarters of Majella National Park. Town Hall: (+39) 0864/40116 Headquarters Majella National Park: (+39) 0864/40851 CANSANO Feud of Cantelmo and Acquaviva, Cansano opens almost suddenly, after a long series of hairpin bends, between the cities of Sulmona and Campo di Giove. From Cansano is possible, on feet or horseback, through wonderful landscape and natural beauties, thanks to its thick network of paths. Town Hall: (+39) 0864/40131 CORFINIO The village stands on the site of ancient Corfinium, important strategic location between Conca Peligna and the Fucino, became (91 a.C.) during the Social War, capital of Italic League. Archaeological excavations revealed ruins and sepulchres, a domus, a temple and necropolis. Don’t Miss: the necropolis, the Cathedral of S. Pelino and the Museum corfiniens antics. Town Hall: (+39) 0864/728350 PACENTRO Medioeval and renaissance picturesque centre, placed at the foot of Mount Morrone, of triangular framework, is featured by the old town centre overlooked by the ruins of Cantelmo’s Castle. This structure is thought to be built in two building phases, one in the XIVth and the other in the XVth Century. The wonderful houses blackened by the passing of time, the stone steps, the “vignale”, portals and porticoes, the squares and the noble buildings create wonderful glimpses that represent the fundamental elements in one of the most interesting and well-preserved old town centre in Abruzzo. Don’t Miss: the Castle, the parish Church of Santa Maria della Misericordia and Piazza del Popolo (People Square), the Town Hall Building dating back to the XVIth Century; the “Minori Osservanti” (Minor Order) Cloister dating back to the XVIth Century. The XVIth Century palaces of Trasmondi, Simone, Pelini, Granata, Autiero and Tollis; the Aringhi Square, with the buildings of Massa-Trippitelli, Avorio and Angelilli palaces. Town Hall: (+39) 0864/41114 PESCOCOSTANZO Pescocostanzo is located at 1400 meters, in the region known as “Abruzzi Major Plateaux” between wide pasturelands and mountain ranges. A real mountain town! The historical evidences of this village, that has been mainly built between XVth and XVIIIth Centuries, are embodied in the extraordinary heritage of monuments dating back to the Renaissance and Baroque and its still living traditional handicrafts such as goldsmith, pillow lace, wrought-iron and wood carving. The main monuments are churches, noble palaces, public buildings and the typical houses with "vignale". A fully-preserved old town centre allows its visitors to discover wonderful glimpses: paved roads, fountains, bloomed balconies and windows. The natural resourcers are not less interesting than the historical ones. Pescocostanzo and its territory, included inthe Majella National Park, offer to its visitor an undamaged environment, designed by the moutains profile around them. This area hosts some woodlands with a remarkable floristic and faunistic value like, for example, “Bosco di Sant'Antonio” (S.Antonio’s Wood) that features an incredible scenario of age-old beeches with bizzarre shapes. A sacred wood, a magic location, where the avifauna finds its haunts. In summer this whistel-stop can be regarded as departure point for hiking or ridings on horseback, while in winter is the ideal place for cross-country skiing, with rings made of several chilometers and itineraries. Don’t Miss: the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria del Colle, the Cloister, the Churches of Gesù e Maria dei Francescani and Suffragio dei Morti. The Palaces of Mansi, Ricciarelli, De Capite, Sabatini, Grilli, Colecchi, Coccopalmeri, del Governatore, Fanzago; the Town Hall Building and the Pillow Lace Museum. Town Hall: (+39) 0864/640003 PETTORANO SUL GIZIO The location of Pettorano sul Gizio reveals that, in medioeval age, a precise defensive choice has been made before its building. The original core stands on a promontory called “La Guardiola”, protected by the Gizio river and the Riaccio torrent. In the highest zone it has been built a strut-tower and, around it, a fortified fence in order to protect the population but also to frighten thanks to its building. The Duke’s Palace is featured by a certain architectural austerity connected with the primal political and defesive role the Cantelmo Family gave it. Don’t Miss: the Sanctuary of S. Margherita d'Antiochia, the Carmelites Cloister and the Duke’s Palace. Palazzo Croce and Palazzo Barocco (Castaldina). Town Hall: (+39) 0864/48115 PRATOLA PELIGNA This whistle-stop stands on hills on the left side of Sagittario river and it was, Until 1806, a feud of Celestine Abbey “S. Spirito del Morrone”. Worthy of mention is the Sanctuary of “Madonna della Libera”: it has been built between 1851 and 1860, on the same site of a pre-existant XVIth Century Chapel hosting a fresco portraying The Virgin Mary; don’t forget to have a look on Amedeo Tedeschi’s fresco and the Giovanni Veneziani’s Stuccoes. Don’t Miss: the “Compianto di Cristo” (Grief for Christ), XVIth Century terra-cotta sculptural group, in the Church of Madonna della Pietà; the Farmer Culture Museum prepared inside an old mill. Town Hall: (+39) 0864/274141 RIVISONDOLI Placed along the ancient "Abruzzi Route", big trade and military arterial street, Rivisondoli is today regarded as famous resort for summer and winter stays. Its location, at foot of Mount Calvario, is an ideal departure point for skiing hikes, since its closeness to the ski-lifts of Mount Pratello. Worthy of mention, in the modern parish Church rebuilt in the first decade of our Century, are the beautiful wooden altar dating back to the XVIIth Century (attributed to Palmiero Grasso) and the marble frontal of the main altar. Don’t Miss: the Sanctuary of Madonna della Portella. Town Hall: (+39) 0864/69114 ROCCACASALE At the foot of Mount Morrone, Roccacasale is overlooked by the ruins of its medioeval castle. Iniside its territory it can be found several evidences of prehistorical civilizations. An italic dwelling, with ruins of polygonal walls and cisterns, was found in the locality called “Fonte delle Fate” (Fairies Fountain). In the same zone it was also found a small statue portraying the “Dea Mater”. Don’t Miss: the Church of S. Michele Arcangelo and the Italic Dwelling in “Località Colle delle Fate”. Town Hall: (+39) 0864/271878. ROCCAPIA Picturesque village, placed in a narrow gorge. Especially in winter, it looks like an amazing “Crib” with a magic and mysterious atmosphere. This whistle-stop is concerned to keep the big-names secrets that walked in its streets: from Pietro Angeleri to Alfonso d'Aragona, from Boccaccio to Lear. Its territory is full of vegetation and also encompasses the beautiful Church of “Madonna del Casale”, along the plain known as “Cinque Miglia” (Five Miles Plain). Don’t Miss: the palaces of Fidei, De Meis and Severo; the Church of S. Maria Maggiore and the Chapel “S.S. Sacramento” with its wonderful frescoes. Town Hall: (+39) 0864/203005 ROCCARASO Roccaraso, places at the South-Eastern edge of Costa Calda, is one of the most famous resort for mountain stays in Abruzzo: the greatest one concerning to equipments, facilities and ski-runs for winter sports. Don’t Miss: the ancient tower in the so-called "Terra vecchia" (Old Ground); the ruins of medioeval village; the small Church of S. Rocco and the Silver bust of S. Ippolito, precious handicraft of Neapolitan goldsmith dating back to the XVIIth Century. Town Hall: (+39) 0864/61921 SULMONA Homeland of the ancient “Love-Singer” Publio Ovidio Nasone and of Comfits, the city of Sulmona is placed in the heart of Abruzzo, in the middle of several arterial streets that connect it with the major cities of Central-Southern Italy. During the prehistorical ages the Valley of Sulmona, also known as “Valle Peligna”, was occupied by a great lake reaching the extreme borders of its territory, from Pettorano sul Gizio to Popoli. Sulmona, since its location in the middle of three National Parks, enjoys a peerless landscape. Moreover, the Compound “Annunziata” is a real architectural jewel, defined by Venturi "wonderful peak of Abruzzi Art". This City hosts some very famous events such as the holiday of "Madonna che scappa" (Running Virgin Mary) - a religious ritual held in Easter - and the Chivalrous Fair in July.
