MOM – MUSEO DELL’ORSO MARSICANO
PALENA

The MOM, “Museo dell’Orso Marsicano” (Museum of Marsican Brown Bear) occupies a wing of former S. Antonio’s Cloister, in the Municipality of Palena: it is formed by five sections set up with panels, dioramas and a striking reproduction of forest at night. The exhibition areas set out the biological features, the life habits, the mythology and the history of this phlegmatic plantigrade. Moreover, these sectors describe the topics connected to the threat of extinction and the activities created in order to protect and safeguard the Marsican Brown Bear. The strength of this museum lies in its popular/educational purposes which prevail over the scientific ones: the interactive section allows to arouse kids and adults curiosity. This structure also features a multi-media hall that enables the showing of documentaries about the Bear and the Park. The Museum regards itself as a meeting point where the you will learn to know, love and safeguard the Bear. It was built in the territory of Palena because this area is usually featured by the presence of the Brown Bear: so, the guided tour of Museum could be completed with the hike through one of the Bear Paths, being in a direct contact with its habitat and sighting the signs of its presence.
