Faunistic Areas

CAMOSCIO
LAMA DEI PELIGNI

Born in 1991, within the reintroduction of Abruzzi Chamois on Majella, this area allows individuals, groups and pupils to sight this wonderful ungulate, endemic species of Abruzzo. The Chamois, disappeared from Majella in the beginnings of last century, came back again and today there are about 230 specimens with a full growth population. Priority species according to the European Directive “Habitat”, it has recently been the central topic of “Life Nature” Project in order to safeguard this animal and carried out in cooperation with two other National Parks, Gran Sasso and Sibillini. The Faunistic Area can be visited by booking at Visitor Centre in Lama dei Peligni. Moreover, this facility is able to arrange thematic tours and/or educational activities.

CAPRIOLO
SERRAMONACESCA

The Faunistic Area of Roe is next to the famous Abbey of San Liberatore a Majella. This zone has a remarkable historical and archaeological value: from this centre the Alento river can be easily reached and there are rocky graves dating back to the Early Christian Age. The Retreat of Sant’Onofrio is located just few km from here: it can be reached through a short trail. Next to the Faunistic Area there is an equipped route for hyposeeing and blind people. The Roe population, the smallest one in the Cervidae family, is in full growth in the Park and the last census points at the presence of more than 200 specimens. It can be arranged tour guides of Faunistic Area by contacting the Cooperative “Nuova Idea”.

CERVO
ATELETA

This Faunistic Area, under the jurisdiction of Gamberale (CH) with small sites inside the Municipality of Ateleta (AQ), hosts the Deer, beechwoods typical ungulate. These undamaged forests extend in the South-Eastern zone of protected area thanks to the preservation activity of Park Authority that acquired and manages a large extent of them. Tour Guides of Faunistic Area can be arranged by contacting the Cooperative “Tre Monti”. In the surroundings it is possible to make wonderful hiking trails, dipped in the luxuriant green of woods and inside a very peculiar landscape.

LONTRA
CARAMANICO TERME

It is the most important breeding centre of European Otter: this Area stands in the "Paolo Barrasso" Visitor Centre in Caramanico Terme (Pescara) and is owned by the National Forest Rangers. In addition to the scientific and reproductive purposes, inside this area an educational enclosure has been created in order to sight a couple of Otters during their natural activities. This mustelid has twilight and nocturnal habitus and it can be sighted only at the darkening. For these reasons the tour guide is carried out in small groups and just in few days. LUPO
PRETORO

The Apennine Wolf, one of the most important mammal in this area, has been chosen as symbol of the Park. At the present moment this species is subject matter of studies, within the “Life Nature” Project, about large-sized carnivorous. The faunistic Area has a remarkable scientific value because of the ethological and health monitoring of this species; it can be visited from individuals or groups by contacting the C.E.A. "Il Grande Faggio". The C.E.A. provides nature camps and tour guides in search of this fascinating predator. Each first Sunday of May, in Pretoro takes places a scenic Representation known as "Lu Lope" (The Wolf) about a San Domenico’s miracle, Holy Patron of this town.
