Tourist Activities…
Established in 2000, “D. Brescia” Botanical Garden collects
nowadays almost 500 vegetable species on a surface of 43.000 m2.
Some sections of the Garden reproduce real environments of Central
Apennines, while other sections are didactical.
The Garden is crossed by two brooks with spontaneous riparian
vegetation.
The symbol of the Garden is the SOLDANELLA DEL CALCARE (Soldanella
minima Hoppe subsp. samnitica Cristofolini & Pignatti), a
species which grows only on Mount Majella and only on a particular
kind of ground: enlargements with dripping water at high altitude.
There are reproductions of several environments, and the most
interesting one is the reproduction of cliffs and screes at high
altitude, where Cymbalaria pallida, Genziana dinarica, Cerastium
tomentosum, Achillea oxyloba subsp. barellieri and a lot of
other species grow that are typical of Mount Majella.
Part of the Garden is dedicated to cultivate trees and plants that
will be later reintroduced in nature. In the Garden there is the
Majella National Park Herbarium, where are planted more than 1.000
specimens - even if the Herbarium itself is still under construction.
However, the specimens and the database of the flora in the Park
(2.100 species) can be visited and consulted by scholars and
students in the Centre next to the Garden.
Information:
“D. Brescia” and “M. Tenore” Botanical Gardens are opened all
year round, but it is always advisable to visit them in spring and
summer. Both Gardens organize guided tours during opening hours
and/or on demand.
Only on demand, both Gardens can organize:
- meetings and film shows on specific subjects (e.g. nature, history,
art and culture in the Park;
- thema didactical tours on specific subjects;
- seminars and theorical-practical courses on specific subjects (e.g.
local folklore, gardening, etc.)
Moreover, both Gardens collect seeds in order to exchange them with
other national and international gardens, and every year they list the
seeds they have collected (index seminum). Both Gardens are available
for trainings and have libraries opened to students and scholars.
