Scientific name: Viola magellensis  Porta & Rigo ex Strobl

Description: It is a herbaceous perennial plant that can grow up to 5 cm, with creeping stems and purple-liliaceous flowers.
It represents one of the few species that can live beyond 2400 m a.s.l., in a hostile habitat like the scree slopes of the high altitudes, where it blooms between June and August.

Distribution: Endemic species of the central Apennines, growing only in Abruzzo and Marche.

Note: It is an endangered species, included in the “Lower Risk” category (LR) of the National and Regional Red List of the Italian Plants and according to the Abruzzo Regional law 11.9.1979 n. 45 it is a protected species.
