LIFE+ 09 NAT/IT/000183 "COORNATA" Project

Development of coordinated protection measures for Apennine Chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica ornata)

The Life Coornata is a conservation project concerning the Apennine chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica ornata), supported by the European Union thanks to the LIFE + financial tool and coordinated by Majella National Park (Coordinator Beneficiary).

As part of this Life Project, important conservation actions are carried out, prioritized also in the National Action Plan for the conservation of the Apennine chamois. Beyond the coordination actions, Majella National Park is is engaged in the realisation of in-the-wild capture of individuals to be transferred to the Sibillini Mountains National Park (PNMS) and to the Sirente-Velino Regional Park (PRSV).

Two of the main objectives of the Life Project is indeed to carry on the reintroduction process of the chamois within the Sibillini Mountains National Park, already launched in the past, and to start up the establishment of a new colony within the Sirente Velino Regional Park.

Beyond these Parks, other partners are: the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park (PNGSL) performing -  within the project - the same actions as Majella National Park; the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park (PNALM) engaged in the implementation of specific conservation actions addressed to its "historic" nucleus inhabiting this territory; Legambiente NGO undertaking actions of environmental education and dissemination.

Beyond the importance of developing concrete conservation actions, the Life COORNATA Project is also crucial for allowing all the Parks affected by the presence of the Apennine chamois to share management measures and to develop a common strategy for long-term preservation.
