Aquilano milk-vetch

Family: Fabaceae

Scientific name: Astragalus aquilanus Anzal.

Description: Herbaceous perennial plant growing up to 30-50 cm. It has woody stems with alternate, imparipinnate base-leaves with strictly elliptic segments. Flowers are yellow and grouped on long stalks, visible in May-June. It grows in meadows and grasslands of the submontane area.

Distribution: endemic species of the central and southern Apennine. It is present in Abruzzo and Calabria.

Notes: This species is listed within the national and regional Red Lists of the endangered species, under the “Vulnerable” category (VU). It is also protected by the regional law 11.9.1979 n. 45, by the EU “Habitat” Directive (priority species in the Annexes II and IV) and by the Bern Convention.
