Lady’s slipper

Family: Orchidaceae

Scientific name: Cypripedium calceolus L.

Description: It is a herbaceous plant that can grow up to 50 cm with 3-4 leaves, arising from the peduncle and 1 or 2 big flowers. Its yellow and inflated labellum reminds of a slipper and for this reason it is called “Lady’s Slipper”. It blooms in May.

Distribution: It is an Eurasian species that in the Apennines can be found only on the Majella massif, with an area of distribution, and in the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, with a few areas of distribution.

Note: It is an endangered species, included in the “Vulnerable” category (VU) of the National and Regional Red List of the Italian Plants and it is also included in the Annex II and IV of the “Habitats” Directive of the European Commission.
