Lobel’s maple

Family: Aceraceae

Scientific name: Acer cappadocicum Gled. subsp. lobelii (Ten.) Murray

Description: It is a deciduous tree that can grow up to 20 m, with smooth and slender trunk. Its leaves are opposite, with palmately-lobed blade, ending with acuminate tip and entire margins. Its double samara fruits have divergent wings with obtuse or straight angle. It blooms between April and May and its fruits ripen between September and October.

Distribution: It is an endemic species of the central-southern Apennines.

Note: It is an endangered species, included in the “Lower Risk” category (LR) of the National and Regional Red List of the Italian Plants.
