Family: Orchidaceae

Scientific name: Nigritella widderi Teppner & Klein

Description: It is a herbaceous plant that can grow up to 20 cm, with hemispherical blooms and rosy flowers smelling of chocolate, that tend to become white as time goes by. It grows over 2,000 m a.s.l., in the alpine grasslands and blooms between June and July.

Distribution: It is a glacial relict that can be easily found in the Alps. In the Apennines it grows only on the Majella, Gran Sasso and Sirente-Velino massifs and in the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise.

Note: According to Abruzzo Regional law 11.9.1979 n. 45 it is a protected species.
