Reclaim and improve the ex railway structures to build a service network for the sustainable tourism

In 2002, with the acquisition of the buildings of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (Italian railway network) in Cansano, Campo di Giove and Palena cities, the Majella National Park started an important project for the sustainable mobility and for the development of a service network for mountain tourism in Abruzzi.

Stations and buildings acquired are located along the Sulmona – Carpinone railway line that in the past offered to passengers a peaceful itinerary through some of the most beautiful mountains of Central Apennines. Thanks to the repair works of the main project, the buildings of the ex railway stations became a reception and information points.

The station buildings of Cansano and Palena became orientation centres for the visit to the Park and guesthouses; the ex café of Cansano became not only a bikes workshop and hire but also a service room; the ex goods station of Palena was converted to a garage for ecological transport.

In Palena a riding school and facilities for the equine tourism, an equipped bikes workshop and hire represent the result of the project too. The railway line, the buildings and the relative areas represent the main structure of an organized network of different routes to discover the Park.

From here you can follow paths, cycle-tracks, routes for riding, frosty roads, you can reach historical and artistic places and enjoy the welcoming and friendly atmosphere of the Majella’s villages. The Park by train represents a concrete opportunity of development of the sustainable tourism that involves all the local authorities.
