Table of the Brigands

It is one of the magic places of Majella: it is a wide pavement of carved rocks at the foot of Mount Cavallo, in front of Mount Focalone and the deep Orfento Valley. On these rocks shepherds and brigands carved their names and their thoughts; with simple inscriptions they left to the eternity of the rock not only their names, their place of origin, but also their relieves due to the difficulty of their condition of poor shepherds. Actually it is very easy to find this kind of inscriptions everywhere on the Majella peaks.

Where: it is at less than an hour of walk from the Blockhaus in the Mount Focalone direction, on the watershed between the Orfento Valley and Selvaromana Deep Valley.

Curiosity: the most famous inscription ascribed to brigands says “nel 1820 nacque Vittorio Emanuele II re d’Italia. Prima era il regno dei fiori ora è il regno della miseria.” (Vittorio Emanuele II, king of Italy was born in 1820. Before it was the kingdom of flowers, nowadays it is the kingdom of poverty).

Read more: by tradition in the 19th century brigands met here to decide how act and who kill. Tavola dei Briganti is on the Park’s Path (P), few hundreds of meters before reaching the small fountain at Acquaviva Saddle.
