San Liberatore a Majella

San Liberatore a Majella is one of the most important abbey complex in the Abruzzi region. It is very close to Serramonacesca, among the olive groves at the foot of Mount Piano di Tarica. During the 19th century it became a ruin and between the 1960’s and the 1970’s it was restored. The presence of the church and the monastery already dates back to 856 AD. During the centuries the church was renovated and its treasures are the 13th century floor made by multicoloured small pieces of stone and its pieces of frescos.

Where: it is located in the northernmost area of the Park, between Manoppello and Roccamontepiano.

Curiosity: along the nearby Alento river there is a complex of rock tombs, maybe used by the first monks community that lived here.

Information and visit: Caramanico and Fara San Martino Visitors Centres

Read more: the Spirit Path reaches the abbey (or ends here). It is a long path that requires 4 days of walk and reaches the most beautiful retreats and places of worship of the Park.
