“Daniela Brescia” Botanical Garden

The “Daniela Brescia” Botanical Garden is located at S. Eufemia a Maiella (PE), just out of the town along S.S. 487. It was created in 2000 and houses about 500 plants on a surface of 43,000 sq m.
In 2001 it was officially recognized as Garden of Regional Interest by the Regional Authority of Abruzzo, in accordance with the regional law 35/1997.
The Garden was designed to contain examples of reproductions of some mountain environments of the Central Apennines, like cliffs and screes of the high altitudes, while an area is dedicated to demonstrative didactic sections, as the field-showcase of agricultural biodiversity. Two streams cross the Garden, surrounded by natural riparian vegetation and giving shelter to the rare white-clawed crayfish.

The symbol of the garden is the Majella soldanella (Soldanella minima Hoppe subsp. samnitica Cristofolini & Pignatti), which was chosen for its exclusive distribution limited at the Majella massif.

The Park's herbarium is located here and holds already more than 1,000 plant samples, which can be consulted by researchers and students. A laboratory for drying medicinal plants and for the extraction of essential oils is also hosted here.

Within the nursery plants are reproduced in order to create native plants and use them for interventions of renaturalization in agriculture (where ancient local cultivars and minor fruits are employed) and vegetal furnishing. Every year the collection of seeds (index seminum) is carried out to allow exchange operations with other botanical gardens in Italy or abroad.

On request it's possible:

  • to realize internships, apprenticeships and college theses or to consult books about naturalistic-floristic subjects in the library;
  • to plan thematic didactical courses, seminars and theoretical-practical courses about different subjects (natural cosmetics, extraction of essential oils, ancient and local traditions, gardening, methods for curing plants etc...).
